The EuroHeartPath consortium officially launched with a successful kick-off meeting in Utrecht, Netherlands, marking the beginning of an ambitious journey to revolutionize cardiovascular care across Europe through 18 innovative pathfinder studies.

On June 13, 2025, representatives from 35 partner organizations across 10 European countries convened at Utrecht for the inaugural EuroHeartPath kick-off meeting. This milestone event officially launched the €27 million Horizon Europe project that promises to transform how we approach cardiovascular disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

The meeting brought together leading researchers, clinicians, technology developers, and industry partners to align on the project’s ambitious goals and establish the collaborative framework for the next five years of groundbreaking research.

18 Pathfinder Studies Launch Simultaneously

At the heart of EuroHeartPath are 18 carefully designed pathfinder studies that will optimize personalized early detection, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of four critical cardiovascular conditions:

  • Heart Failure: Developing AI-powered early detection systems and personalized treatment protocols
  • Atrial Fibrillation: Creating innovative monitoring solutions and prevention strategies
  • Ventricular Fibrillation: Advancing emergency response and predictive technologies
  • Coronary Disease: Implementing comprehensive prevention and treatment pathways

Innovation at the Core

The project places particular emphasis on cutting-edge technologies including AI-powered diagnostics, digital health tools, point-of-care testing, and robotics. These innovations will be integrated into comprehensive care pathways designed to improve patient outcomes while reducing healthcare system costs.

“EuroHeartPath represents a paradigm shift in cardiovascular care. By combining the expertise of Europe’s leading institutions with breakthrough technologies, we’re not just improving treatment – we’re reimagining prevention.”Prof dr. Pim van der Harst, University Medical Center Utrecht

Collaborative Excellence

The kick-off meeting emphasized the project’s collaborative nature, with work packages distributed across multiple partner institutions to leverage diverse expertise and resources. Key focus areas include:

  • Clinical validation of new diagnostic technologies
  • Development of AI algorithms for predictive modeling
  • Integration of digital health platforms
  • Regulatory pathway optimization
  • Health economics and impact assessment

Looking Ahead

With the official launch complete, EuroHeartPath teams across Europe are now mobilizing to begin their respective research activities. The project timeline extends through 2030, with regular milestones and collaborative meetings planned to ensure coordinated progress.

The next major consortium gathering is scheduled for the ESC TV Connect Congress in August 2025, where preliminary findings and early insights will be shared with the broader cardiovascular community.
